back when i worked for the spades - which somehow seems like ages ago at this point - kate and andy and some of their friends who had started the company with them would go for a winter escape to mexico every december / january. i knew they always traveled to san josé del cabo, near cabo san lucas at the tip of baja mexico, but i was never privy to where they stayed. i am now, thanks to the may issue of elle magazine... in an effort to promote her much more expensive versions of mexican handicrafts, she discloses:
What was the inspiration for your spring collection?
San José del Cabo, Mexico, where i've been vacationing since 1986. The embroidery, bird motifs, and tropical colors that i used are all riffs on traditional handicrafts.
Where do you stay while there?
My favorite hotel is the Twin Dolphin. It's right on the water so you feel like you're at the edge of the earth. It's not overly landscaped and there's a very cool bar with multicolor cushions and Donald Judd-like chairs.
hmmm... donald judd-like, and on the beach. i like that their site has a list of nearby surf spots, too, though rates currently start at $385 ($270 in off-season). here's an article from the nov 2003 t+l that gives the lowdown on the best of baja.
thanks, kate - duly noted. (maybe someone should tell her about marfa...)
